When people say “Jesus Christ,” some think Christ is His last name—like Joseph Christ and Mary Christ. It’s not!
“Christ” comes from the Greek word Christos (Χριστός), which means “Anointed One.” It’s a title, not a surname. The Hebrew equivalent is Messiah (Mashiach)—the promised deliverer God said would come.
In the Bible, to anoint someone meant to pour (or smear) oil on them as a sign they were chosen, set apart, and empowered by God for a specific mission. Kings, priests, and prophets were anointed, and the oil symbolized God’s Spirit resting on them—His authority and power enabling them to do what they could not do on their own.
Jesus is THE Anointed One, but Scripture also says God anoints believers with His Spirit! We are empowered to continue His work—to represent Him, proclaim His kingdom, and walk in His authority (Acts 10:38; 2 Corinthians 1:21–22; John 14:12).
So when you say “Jesus Christ,” you’re declaring that He is the Spirit-anointed King sent by God, and the One who now anoints His people to carry His mission into the world.
