“Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go….” Genesis 28:15
As an adult, have you looked back on the things you did as a child and wondered, How did I survive all that? I grew up in Russia in the 1990s when we didn’t have the Internet, cell phones, or tablets. Not very many of us even had a TV!
Outside of school hours, all we had was free time and often we’d go out walking at 7:00 in the morning and not come back until the sun was setting. Then we’d wait for those serious discussions with our parents, when they told us that we couldn’t keep wandering so far away, disappearing from the house for long periods without letting them know where we were, or whether we were okay. We’d stand there with our heads bowed, promising to do better—until the next day!
Of course, now I understand why my parents worried so much. They prayed for us morning, noon, and night, asking the Lord to save us, no matter where we were. They claimed the promise, “For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways. In their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.” Psalm 91:11–12.
The boys I grew up with all got along quite well. We walked, rode our bicycles, and climbed on top of our building. We jumped onto wagons, and even exploded homemade bombs. But the stupidest thing we did (and at the time, it seemed the height of heroism) was climb to the very top of the construction cranes! We scaled the metal structure, and then climbed down along the metal cables, turning our hands and feet slowly, as we descended from those dizzying heights. We melted radioactive lead in a car garage, and then jumped from the rooftop to get away from the guards and the angry owner! Back then, it all seemed like a normal and carefree childhood!
The most serious thing that happened to me was when we climbed into a freight train car that carried cement. I stumbled and fell on one of the iron railings and broke my arm—but in three weeks, I was back to normal! Only now can I imagine the power of my parent’s prayers—and how the Lord protected us throughout our “happy” childhood.
I believe we don’t know how God protects us most of the time. We have no idea from what troubles our Lord has saved us. The devil tries to hurt our health and our lives every day; and only sincere faith in God, along with prayer and staying close to Him, will help us endure all these trials. It’s the only way we can be protected from our sinful world. Remember, God is with us, and He will help us, wherever we go.
