What is that foul smell?

When I was reading the Torah portion today, I was reminded of a story of a man who was going fishing and smelled a very foul odor. Knowing it was probably a dead animal he continued on to do his fishing.

You would ask, what does that have to do with the Torah portion? Twenty-three time in this week’s Torah portion the word “Unclean” is used. The Hebrew word for unclean is tame (H2931) which means foul in a religious sense and comes from the same primitive root; to be foul, especially in a ceremonial or moral sense (contaminated).

The priest and his sons were told by YHWH not to touch any dead animal throughout the Torah portion. If they touched the carcass of an unclean animal, they were considered unclean until the evening. This is because the dead animal was considered, as the Hebrew definition says, foul or contaminated.

We too are instructed to not touch the unclean things. You might say, I wouldn’t touch a dead animal. But do we touch the dead sins that YHWH has delivered us from? Just like YHWH didn’t want the priest and his sons to touch any dead animal he also doesn’t want us to go back to or even desire our old sins. We are suppose to be dead to sin.

Romans 6:1-2 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

1 Peter 2:24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

The old man and his sins are supposed to be dead.

Romans 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

Ephesians 4:22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;

Colossians 3:9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;
Galatians 4:9 But now, after that ye have known YHWH, or rather are known of YHWH, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?

YHWH wants us to be holy (set-apart) like the priest and his sons. Of course, we know we cannot be perfect because we live in a fallen world. We can only strive for perfection.
We can only try to be set-apart as much as we can for YHWH.

YHWH Bless
