“Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?” — 1 Corinthians 3:16

Sermon: God Dwells Within You
This verse is both a question and a revelation. Paul says, “Do you not know…” as if to remind believers of something so sacred, so life-changing, that they should never forget it. You are not empty. You are not abandoned. You are not merely flesh and bone trying to survive a hard world on your own. If you belong to God, then His Spirit dwells in you. That means your life has become holy ground.
In the Old Testament, the temple was the place where God’s presence was honored. It was sacred, set apart, and filled with awe. People understood that the temple was not common. It was not to be treated carelessly. And now Paul says something astonishing: you are God’s temple. Not made of stone, not built by human hands, but made alive by the Spirit of God Himself. The Lord has chosen to dwell within His people.
That truth changes the way we see ourselves. Many people carry shame, brokenness, fear, and a deep sense of unworthiness. Some feel too damaged for God to stay near. Others feel too weak to be useful. But this verse reminds us that God does not dwell in us because we are perfect. He dwells in us because of His grace. His presence is not earned by our strength; it is given through His mercy. The Spirit of God comes not only to comfort us, but to transform us.
When God’s Spirit dwells in a person, darkness does not get the final word. The Holy Spirit brings conviction, healing, wisdom, peace, and power. He works within us quietly and faithfully, shaping our hearts to become more like Christ. What begins as surrender becomes transformation. What begins as weakness becomes strength in Him. What begins as sorrow can become peace because God is not only around us—He is within us.
This also means that our lives matter deeply. Our thoughts matter. Our choices matter. The way we treat our bodies, our words, and other people matters. Why? Because a temple is not a place for careless living. A temple is a dwelling place of God’s presence. We are called to live with reverence, not because God is harsh, but because He is holy. Holiness is not cold religion; it is the beautiful result of God living inside a yielded heart.
And there is another comfort here: if God’s Spirit dwells in you, then you are never truly alone. In the quiet moments, He is there. In the battle, He is there. In grief, confusion, temptation, and weariness, He is there. The same God who made the heavens has chosen to dwell in His people. That should humble us, strengthen us, and fill us with wonder.
So today, remember who you are in Christ. You are not just trying to hold yourself together. You are a dwelling place of the living God. Let your heart become a place of worship. Let your life become a place where His light shines. Let your thoughts, words, and actions reflect the holy presence within you. And when you feel weak, remember this: the Spirit of God still dwells in you, and He is able to carry you, cleanse you, and renew you.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
thank You for Your holy Word and for the powerful reminder that we are Your temple and that Your Spirit dwells in us. What an incredible gift, Lord, that You would choose to live within Your people. We are humbled by Your presence and grateful for Your mercy.
Forgive us for the times we have forgotten who we are in You. Forgive us for living as though we are empty, abandoned, or without purpose. Help us remember that Your Spirit is near, not far away, and that Your presence within us changes everything.
Lord, cleanse our hearts. Remove what does not belong in Your temple. Wash away bitterness, fear, pride, sin, and unbelief. Fill us fresh with Your peace, Your wisdom, Your holiness, and Your love. Let Your light shine in every dark place within us. Heal what is broken. Strengthen what is weak. Restore what has been worn down by life.
Teach us to live with reverence and joy, knowing that our lives belong to You. Let our thoughts be pleasing to You, our words honoring to You, and our actions shaped by Your Spirit. Make us more like Jesus. Let others see Your presence in us through the way we love, forgive, endure, and walk in truth.
And when we feel alone, remind us that You are dwelling within us. When we feel weary, be our strength. When we feel unworthy, remind us of Your grace. When we feel lost, let Your Spirit guide us back into peace and truth.
Thank You, Lord, that we are not empty vessels, but temples of the living God. May our hearts remain open to You, our lives surrendered to You, and our spirits deeply aware of Your holy presence every day.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
