“For it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.” Philippians 2:13
As the guests arrived, the Game Master met each one at the door. Before entrance was allowed, they were handed an envelope with their name written on the outside. One by one, the excited players opened them and eagerly read their assignments. No one knew at that time what great adventure the Game Master had in store for each
of them.
With much excitement, they were off into the unknown, gathering, planning, working— sometimes with others, sometimes alone—following the tasks they had been assigned. They weren’t always easy, but each had a unique purpose.
As they watched the other players, some felt confused. Why were some given easier tasks than others? Why were some tasks more glamorous? Why did she get to do that, and I didn’t? But regardless of the many questions stirring in their hearts and minds, they continued to fulfill the plan of the Game Master.
Then, at just at the perfect time, the Game Master blew the trumpet. “Time is up. Game over!” He called each of His players, and one by one, required them to hand over their envelopes. Each assignment was read aloud, and for the first time ever, all the players fully understood the purpose of each task given. They had each asked “Why?” at one time or another, and now it was all clear to them. Yes, it all made sense.
Hand in hand, they followed the Game Master into His home, and oh, the celebration that was prepared for them! With much joy they entered into their rest. Yes, the time of their work was over, the party had begun!
As Christians, each of us have an assignment from God. It is not our place to look at each other and compare tasks. God knows our strengths and weaknesses, and His plan for each of us is perfect. Someday soon, our Master, Jesus Christ, is going to blow His trumpet and call each of us home for an eternal celebration! Until then, let’s each be faithful in our assignment. You and I have a unique purpose—let’s do our best to make the Master proud!
