"For by one offering he has perfected forever those who are being sanctified."
Hebrews 10:14
SAINTS IN POSITION, PROGRESSIVELY SANCTIFIED
This verse contains what is truly the key to the theology of sanctification. "Perfected forever" is the positioning: in Christ, before God, we are holy (perfect). This is the legal reality of justification. "Those who are being sanctified" is the process: a progressive transformation toward this perfection in our lived experience.
These two realities are not contradictory. Positional holiness is the foundation from which progressive sanctification becomes possible, not its prerequisite. You are not becoming perfect in order to be accepted. You are being accepted, and you are progressively becoming what you already are positionally.
"By one offering," Christ's sacrifice is sufficient for everything and forever. There is no need to augment it, complete it, or repeat it. Its uniqueness and absolute sufficiency are the foundation of the entire Christian life.
Do you live from the perfection you have in Christ, or do you still live as someone trying to earn it? The former produces freedom and the drive toward sanctification. The latter produces exhaustion and shame.
Oh Father, thank you that I am brought to holiness (perfection) forever through the one offering of Christ. May I live from this positional holiness, and may sanctification be the consequence of what you have already accomplished, in the name of Jesus. Amen.
