“Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”
— John 7:38
River of Living Water will flow from within them.
Jesus spoke these words at the Feast of Tabernacles. During the rite in which the priest poured water on the altar in the Temple, Jesus stood up and cried out: “Whoever believes in me will have within them not a sprinkling of water, but rivers of living water.” An abundant plural, and John clarifies that this refers to the Spirit.
The Holy Spirit within you is not a reservoir, nor a discreet presence. It is a dynamic spring that flows outward. The spiritual life from within overflows to others.
“Will flow from within them,” from the inside out. The disciple of Jesus filled with the Spirit is not only transformed inwardly, but becomes a blessing to those around them. The living water flowing within them seeks to flow out to others. The fullness of the Spirit is manifested by overflowing.
The Spirit within you is the source, not a well. Do you live in this overflowing inner abundance, or in a feeling of emptiness and dryness? Dryness is often a sign of disconnection from the source; come back and drink.
Pray humbly: Lord Jesus, fill me with your Spirit until I am overflowing. May rivers of living water flow from my life to all who thirst around me. May your fullness within me be a blessing to those around me for all eternity. Amen.
