Undistracted and Undivided Focus

Leonardo Da Vinci dedicated three whole years to his famous painting of “The Last Supper’determining in his heart that it would be his crowning work. Before the unveiling, he decided to show it to a friend-someone whose opinion he had the utmost respect for. The friend's praise was unbounded. “The cup in Jesus' hands,” he said, “is especially beautiful.”

Disappointed and dejected, at once Da Vinci began to paint out the cup. Astonished, the distinguished friend asked for an explanation. The answer resounded so deep in my heart.

“Nothing," Da Vinci explained, “must distract from the person of Christ." 1

Isn't that so true in our lives each and every single day, each and every single season? It is filled with good things, things that pull our attention and dare I say even beautiful things. Yet, in the words of the great artist, nothing must distract us from Christ. In Him is everything we need. It is by Him and for Him, and Christ holds everything together. Our entire lives can be anchored, centred, and fixated on the person of Jesus Christ.

When Da Vinci removed the cup, something had to be done with the hand holding it. Jesus' left hand was outstretched just above the table, lifting, as if to bless and to command. The now empty right hand? Stretched out as if to invite us to come, and love Him, look on Him, trust in Him, follow Him, give Him all of our hearts and our lives.

May God fan aflame that desire in our hearts once again for Him. May nothing in life pull our undivided focus away from the person of Jesus Christ.

CHRIST IS VICTOR
