“But this is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” declares the Lord. “I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.”

— Jeremiah 31:33

THE LAW ENGRAVED IN THE HEART, NOT ON STONE

The difference between the old and new covenants lies in where God’s law is inscribed. On tablets of stone, the law is external, coercive, producing an awareness of sin without the power of victory. In the heart, the law is internal, transformative, producing a natural desire for obedience.

This promise of Jeremiah anticipates what the Holy Spirit will accomplish in the new covenant. The regenerated believer does not obey the law because they are compelled to do so externally. They obey it because their heart has been transformed and their desires are gradually aligning with God’s.

“I will be their God, and they will be my people”—this is the essence of the covenant. Everything lies in this reciprocity. A relationship, not just a system. A mutual belonging that defines the identity of both parties.

Do you examine your Christian life primarily as a list of rules to follow, or as a relationship with someone you naturally want to please? The difference between the two is the difference between the old and new covenants.

Oh God, thank you for the new covenant that writes your law on my heart. May my obedience spring from desire rather than compulsion, from love rather than fear. Transform my desires to be like yours in the name of Jesus, Amen.
