“Jesus answered and said to them, ‘This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.’” John 6:29
Let me tell you a story of the most astonishing high-wire artist ever, whose fame brought his act before heads of state throughout the world. He never used a net, increasing the audiences’ thrill of watching his daring stunts.
One night, while performing for the Queen, he rode a tandem bicycle across the tightrope with twin sisters aboard—one on the handlebars, the other seated behind him. The audience went wild.
“Bravo!” cheered one heavy-set man on the front row, applauding enthusiastically. “Bravo!”
The acrobat shinnied down the pole, and bounded toward the 300-lb man.
“For my next act, I will walk a wheelbarrow across the wire with a man in it. Do you believe I can do this?”
“Absolutely,” beamed the star-struck admirer, “I have complete faith you can.”
“Good. Then hop into the wheelbarrow!”
You see, believing in something means to “be-living-in” it. Although this story is a concoction of my imagination, the concept is not. Let’s elevate that concept to the spiritual realm and give it serious consideration.
Genuine faith in God requires an “all in” investment of action. A saving faith—a true belief in the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior—is more than a mere intellectual assent. In fact, James 2:19 tells us, “Even the demons believe—and tremble!” The faith and belief demonstrated by these demonic beings does not lead to salvation, because “faith without works is dead.”
When Jesus told the searching crowds, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent,” He wasn’t suggesting they merely accept He was the Messiah and agree with the truth, intellectually. Our Lord was offering salvation through an invitation to trust in Him, to cleave to and rely upon Him—to be united with Him as the True Vine.
Believing in Jesus means to “be-living-in” Jesus. The Apostle Paul uses the phrase “in Christ” or “in Him” over one hundred times to express the concept of living in such a way that we take on Christ’s identity, and are conformed to His image. Just read Ephesians 1:1-14. In those few short verses, we learn amazing truths about what it means to live in Christ. In Him we are counted as faithful, blessed with every spiritual blessing, chosen, and recipients of grace. In Christ, we have redemption and the forgiveness of sins. Furthermore, the mystery of God’s will is made known to those included in Christ. We put our hope in Him, and we are marked in Christ with the seal of the Holy Spirit.
Believing in Christ as Savior means to “be-living-in” Him as Lord and Master of our lives. It includes trust and obedience. It means if we believe, it’s time to hop into the wheelbarrow.
