“If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you.”
John 13:14-15
THE MASTER ON HIS KNEES BEFORE HIS SERVANTS
Jesus knew that he is Lord of all, that all things are in his hands, and that the Father has entrusted everything to him. With an awareness of his Lordship, he rises and washes his disciples’ feet.
Jesus does not wash their feet because he has forgotten who he is. He washes them precisely because he knows who he is. True humility is not self-ignorance; it is the exercise of authority for the benefit of others.
“An example I have given you”: service is not an anecdote from Jesus’ life. It is a program. A way of being in the community that must be repeated. Washing another's feet means taking the lowest place to serve the dignity of another.
Who in your life needs you to wash their feet this week—that is, to willingly take the lowest place to serve them, without being asked? Take this concrete step.
Let this be your prayer: Lord Jesus, you who are Master, you placed yourself at the feet of your disciples. Free me from the pride that resists service. May I serve in the strength of my identity in you, not from the weakness of insecurity. Amen.
