Good things don't last; it's too good to be true. You hear these words so often in life that you begin to believe it is the reality of life. Those who live believing this lie often live in fear of whatever they do. They get into wonderful relationships and begin to think it is too good to be true and probably won't last. When their relationship fails they say to themselves, "I knew it wouldn't last. It was too good to be true." Yet when God created everything, he declared it to be good. Good intentions produce a good ending or good fruit. God had good intentions for creating the earth and man himself. The fact that man has lived in a hostile environment for so long does not mean that that's the way God designed or intended it. The fact that sin and the devil were allowed to ruffle the still waters of God's goodness does not mean that nothing good happens under the sun. There are still people with good hearts, marriages with faithful partners, and people with good intentions. The presence of Sin and the devil has never erased God's original intentions. Nor have they erased His willingness to help goodness manifest in the lives of people. Psalm 31:19-20 declares of the Lord:
'How great is your goodness, which you have stored up for those who fear you, which you bestow in the sight of men on those who take refuge in you. In the shelter of your presence you hide them from the intrigues of men; in your dwelling you keep them safe from accusing tongues.'
That means goodness can exist in the midst of hostility. The scripture above tells us that goodness can exist in the midst of hostility because God is a shelter against that hostility. That is why David says in Psalm 23:5-6:
' You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. [6] Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.'
The problem is that people think that the evilness of man and the devil can overwhelm God. So, they live in fear, always expecting evil to happen to them. They have forgotten that on the cross of Calvary, Jesus defeated the devil and his cohorts. He has the upper hand, not the devil. By the power of what Jesus achieved on the cross, you too can have the upper hand over the devil, if you accept Him as your saviour. A Christian, a person who has accepted Jesus as their personal Savior, has a defendable position and reason to expect good things to happen to them. As the Bible says: 'He that swells in us is greater than he that swells in the world.' A good life is intentional. It isn't a matter of throwing dice and hoping for a good outcome. No, sir. It is a matter of throwing dice because you know that a good outcome is guaranteed because of the power that your God has over your enemy. We get into a fight because we know it has already been won for us and not because we are betting on luck. The assurance of the effectiveness of the power of the cross of Calvary is greater than any deemed stroke of lack. Jesus was intentional when he went to the cross. He knew the goodness that would manifest out of surrendering Himself on the cross. He expects us to do the same. He expects us to be intentional in doing things that can manifest good in our lives. If we trust His methods, we will see His goodness manifest itself in our lives.
'God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfil?' declares the Bible in Numbers 23:19.
