Dear Father,

In a world dominated by the struggle for survival, where many are burdened with a trunk of needs, whether it be basic or luxury--it takes intentionality to stand out. To not only see that our needs are met, but to live honorably while doing so. A kind of honor that is not hidden, but evident--so visible that it can be seen and even testified about.

I ponder the story of Jabez in the scripture which says, “And Jabez was more honourable than his brethren: and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bare him with sorrow.” Jabez experienced limitations in matters beyond his control: constrained by a label of sorrow laid upon him by his own mother. Yet he did not just strive; he did so honorably.

I think of the many situations that pose as strongholds against our becoming: circumstances that seem to present justifiable grounds for actions and dispositions that are not right, yet feel excusable. For how do we remain joyful when we are called sorrow? How can we succeed when limitations seem to be what surround us? How can we be at peace in the midst of uncertainty?

Much more than when or why success comes, Jabez reveals how--circumstances do not determine a less honorable life because honor, in truth, is a choice.
