Finally, at the end of his life, tradition tells us that Peter began to flee Rome to avoid martyrdom. But on his way out of the city, Jesus appeared to him, and Peter asked, “Lord, where are you going?” (Quo vadis? in Latin). Jesus replied, saying, “I’m going to Rome to be crucified again.”
According to the story, Peter turned around and walked back into the city of Rome, where he was crucified for his Lord.
