For years, insect eyes were described as simple, just tiny lenses collecting light. But scientists have been asking a deeper question: how does such a small brain handle massive amounts of visual information without becoming overwhelmed? Researchers at the University of Konstanz in Germany set out to answer that by studying the hummingbird hawkmoth.

What they found was a highly organized processing system in the brain. Visual information enters through the eyes and is immediately filtered in a region called the lamina, the first visual processing center. There, signals are reduced, categorized, and passed through multiple layers so that only the most relevant information moves forward. This allows precise navigation, object recognition, and clear vision in both bright and dim conditions. Even more striking, the same cells can perform different roles depending on the layer, collecting signals in one place and suppressing surrounding signals in another to sharpen the image.
