Title: THE RADICAL RESPONSE: FROM RETALIATION TO THANKSGIVING
(Compiled By) Televangelist HB Morgan Digital Library Publications
OPENING SCRIPTURE (STANDING ON THE WORD)
“Rejoice evermore. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:16, 18 (KJV)
MAIN TEXT FOR MEDITATION
“But I say to you that everyone who continues to be angry with his brother or harbors malice (enmity of heart) against him shall be liable to and unable to escape the punishment imposed by the court; and whoever speaks contemptuously and insultingly to his brother shall be liable to and unable to escape the punishment imposed by the Sanhedrin, and whoever says, You cursed fool! [You empty-headed idiot!] shall be liable to and unable to escape the hell (Gehenna) of fire.” — Matthew 5:22 (AMPC)
CONTEXT & BACKGROUND
In the Old Testament, there was a prevalent understanding of justice that echoed the law of retaliation: an eye for an eye. Under that dispensation, prayers for vengeance or “back-to-sender” imprecations were often voiced by prophets and psalmists. However, with the arrival of Christ’s new covenant, a seismic shift occurred. Jesus introduced a higher law—the law of love and the Kingdom.
Our theme scripture opens with the authoritative phrase, “But I say to you.” This is not a suggestion; it is a divine reset button for the believer’s heart. As a blood-bought, born-again child of God, your spiritual warfare is no longer carnal. The practice of praying for evil to be returned to your enemies is a carryover from an old dispensation that Jesus explicitly corrected. You are not called to be a sender of curses; you are called to be a conduit of blessing.
AMPLIFIED REFLECTION: THE POWER OF A NON-RETALIATORY HEART
1. The Danger of the "Back-to-Sender" Mentality
Many believers, when faced with attack, instinctively run to scriptures that seem to justify cursing their enemies. But remember: scripture can be twisted to serve evil. God is not confused. When Jesus said, “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:44), He sealed the deal. Praying “back to sender” is an act of harboring malice. According to Matthew 5:22, continuous anger and contempt put you in the same spiritual danger as the offender. You cannot fight fire with fire without getting burned. Your weapon is not retaliation; your weapon is faith in God’s promise: “No weapon that is formed against you shall prosper” (Isaiah 54:17).
2. The Alchemy of Thanksgiving
Now, what do you do when the bad news arrives? What happens when your spouse asks for a divorce, the doctor gives a grim report, the landlord threatens eviction, or the client cancels the deal? Human nature screams, “Fight back! Be anxious! Complain!” But the Spirit says, “In everything, give thanks.”
Thanksgiving is not a denial of pain; it is an act of supreme faith. It is the spiritual force that:
· Multiplies the Little: Just as Jesus gave thanks for five loaves and two fish, thanksgiving turns your lack into abundance.
· Creates New Things: When you thank God for a closed door, He opens a supernatural window.
· Changes Your Condition: Paul and Silas prayed and sang praises (gave thanks) at midnight; the prison walls didn't just shake—they opened.
· Causes a Resurrection: Before Lazarus rose, Jesus said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me.” Thanksgiving precedes resurrection power.
· Brings God on the Scene: The Bible says God inhabits the praises of His people. When you thank Him, you are not ignoring the problem; you are inviting the Solution.
3. The Connection Between the Two
There is a direct link between not praying evil against your enemy and giving thanks in everything. When you refuse to send curses back, you empty your heart of bitterness. An empty heart, free of malice, is the only environment where true thanksgiving can grow. You cannot thank God for your situation while secretly cursing the person who caused it. The two practices are incompatible. Today, choose the higher way: Release your offenders, and thank your God.
PRAYER FOR TODAY
Heavenly Father, I thank You for the truth that liberates me from the cycle of retaliation. Lord, forgive me for every time I have harbored malice or wished evil upon another, even in my private prayers. I renounce the spirit of "back to sender." I choose to trust that no weapon fashioned against me shall prosper without me needing to fight back in the flesh.
Father, I activate my thanksgiving. I thank You for the good news and, by faith, for the bad news that is turning into a testimony. I thank You for the money lost, for You are my ultimate Provider. I thank You for the difficult report, for You are my Healer. I thank You for the strained relationship, for You are my Restorer. This is Your will for me in Christ Jesus. Amen.
FURTHER STUDY (BIBLE REFERENCES)
· Isaiah 54:1-17 (The promise of protection without retaliation)
· Matthew 5:43-45 (The law of loving your enemy)
· Psalm 100:1-5 (The entry point of Thanksgiving)
· Romans 12:19-21 (Vengeance is Mine, says the Lord)
WISDOM CAPSULE FOR TODAY
“All they think about is causing a disturbance; all they talk about is making trouble.” — Proverbs 24:2 (MSG)
Do not lower yourself to the level of the foolish. Their agenda is trouble; your agenda is thanksgiving. Wise conversation and a grateful heart are concepts that fools cannot grasp (Proverbs 24:7). Stay in the Spirit.
DECLARATION FOR THE DAY
· I refuse to curse what God has called me to bless.
· I reject malice, anger, and the spirit of retaliation.
· I receive the grace to give thanks in every circumstance.
· My thanksgiving is creating a miracle right now.
