HOW DO WE KNOW THE JUDGMENT IS IN PROGRESS?
“Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.” — Daniel 8:14
William Miller understood this prophecy using the biblical day-for-a-year principle (Numbers 14:34; Ezekiel 4:6), where 2300 days represent 2300 years. The prophecy begins with the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem (Daniel 9:25), which was given in 457 BC (Ezra 7:11–26). Counting 2300 years from this point brings us to 1844 AD.
This is more than just a year. The prophecy is linked to a specific sanctuary event: the cleansing of the sanctuary, which in the earthly system took place on the Day of Atonement.
On the tenth day of the seventh month…” (Leviticus 16:29) and “Ye shall afflict your souls” (Leviticus 23:27) describe a solemn Day of Atonement in which the people humbled themselves outside the sanctuary in repentance, self-examination, and rest from ordinary work, while the high priest alone entered the Most Holy Place to make atonement, cleansing the sanctuary from the accumulated sins of Israel, which were ultimately placed upon the scapegoat.
In the biblical lunar calendar, the 10th day of the 7th month in 1844 corresponds to 22 October 1844. This is understood as the fulfillment of the prophecy, when Christ entered the Most Holy Place in the heavenly sanctuary.
What the earthly high priest did in type, Christ now does in reality. After 1844, Christ began His work in the Most Holy Place of the heavenly sanctuary, known as the Investigative Judgment. This involves the cleansing of the heavenly sanctuary, the review of the lives of God’s people, and the blotting out of sin.
Just as ancient Israel was called to afflict their souls on the Day of Atonement, so today we are called to repentance, surrender, preparation of heart, and faith in Christ’s intercession.
Are you ready for Christ’s soon return?
