"The righteous man has many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all."

Psalm 34:19

ALWAYS DELIVERED

This verse does not minimize reality. David is not saying that the righteous have no problems. He is saying that they have many. This is biblical honesty that does not accept the promise of a Christian life without suffering.

The plural in the expression "many troubles" is significant. Not a single misfortune that one experiences once and remembers as something from the past. Many, a succession, a regularity. The life of the righteous is not an absence of adversity; it is a journey through adversity.

"But the Lord delivers him from them all"—that is the promise. Not "sometimes," nor "generally," nor "ultimately, if you persevere." Always. Deliverance may be delayed, may take unexpected forms, may come through painful paths, but it is coming, it will surely manifest itself. This is God's own guarantee.

What misfortune are you experiencing? Count the past deliverances God has brought you. Each one is proof of the "always" in this verse. The next deliverance belongs to the same faithfulness of God.

Oh Lord, you have delivered your people in Scripture, you have delivered me in the past, and you will do so again. I cling to your "always" in this time of misfortune. May your deliverance come in your own way and in your own time, in the name of Jesus. Amen.
