Sermon: “Given the Right to Become” — John 1:12

Author: Will Helton

“But to all who did receive Him, who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.” — Gospel of John 1:12

There is something deeply personal about this verse. It does not speak to crowds only—it speaks to you. It says that those who receive Him, those who believe in His name, are given something extraordinary: the right to become children of God.

Not servants trying to earn favor.

Not strangers standing at a distance.

But children—welcomed, known, and loved.

Think about the images you’ve been creating—the child at the doorway, the traveler on the road, the name written on the scroll, the embrace of believers, the open hands beneath heaven. Every one of these tells the same story: God is not pushing people away—He is receiving them.

The world often labels people as rejected, forgotten, or unworthy. But heaven writes a different story. Where the world says, “You don’t belong,” God says, “Come home.”

Receiving Christ is not about perfection—it is about surrender. It is the moment a weary soul stops striving and simply opens their hands. Like the traveler kneeling outside the gate, we come with nothing to offer but faith—and that is enough.

And when we receive Him, something changes at the deepest level. It is not just forgiveness—it is adoption. You are brought into the family of God. Your identity is no longer defined by your past, your failures, or your wounds. It is defined by the Father’s love.

You are not tolerated.

You are not barely accepted.

You are welcomed.

And that welcome doesn’t happen in isolation. God places us in a family—brothers and sisters in faith who surround us, lift us, and walk with us. The circle of light grows as more hearts come home.

So the question is simple, yet eternal:

Have you received Him?

Not just heard about Him.

Not just admired Him.

But truly opened your life to Him.

Because the door is already open.

The light is already shining.

The Father’s arms are already extended.

All that remains… is to step forward.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Your love is greater than anything we could ever fully understand. Thank You for not turning us away when we were lost, broken, and far from You. Thank You for opening the door and calling us home.

Lord, we come to You with open hands today. We receive Jesus—not just in words, but in our hearts. We believe in His name, in His grace, and in His power to save and transform us.

Let Your light fall on every dark place within us.

Replace fear with peace.

Replace shame with identity.

Replace distance with belonging.

Teach us what it means to live as Your children—secure, loved, and full of faith. Help us to welcome others the way You have welcomed us, with compassion, grace, and truth.

Surround us with Your presence, and place us in a community that reflects Your love. Let our lives become a testimony that no one is too far gone, and no one is beyond Your reach.

We thank You for calling us Yours.

In the name of Jesus,

Amen.
