Zhengzhou has deep roots in ancient China. Situated on the banks of the Yellow River, it served as one of China’s eight ancient capitals, and is known as the birthplace of the Yellow Emperor, a legendary figure in Chinese history. Today, it is the capital of the Henan Province and has the eleventh largest urban population in all of China.
In this deeply-rooted Chinese city, we are praying that the church would also be deeply-rooted. As house church pastors and Christians navigate the dense urban landscape of this modern metropolis, our hope is that they will go deep in the gospel. Will you join us in praying for them?
This Week's Prayer Guide
May 3 - This month, we are praying for the city of Zhengzhou, the capital city of Henan Province in central China. It’s known to be the cradle of ancient Chinese civilization, and serves as an important transportation hub in China today. Pray that the gospel can take root in this city and extend its reach far and wide.
May 4 - Zhengzhou is situated on the south of the Yellow River and is known to be the location where the legendary Yellow Emperor founded the Chinese civilization. In the last half century, it is also the seat of two large house church networks in China. May Zhengzhou be known more for being the cradle of Christ’s Kingdom in China, and not as simply the cradle of an earthly civilization.
May 5 - Zhengzhou, situated at the heart of China, has been historically known as the “Central Plains.” Many ancient emperors must eventually conquer this region in order to establish their dynasties. May Christ conquer the hearts of the people in this region and establish his Kingdom in China.
May 6 - China is sometimes known (and still called by this name in Chinese) as the “Middle Kingdom,” and the middle of this Middle Kingdom is the Henan Province, where Zhengzhou is a capital. In ancient times, it bears the title “Center of Heaven and Earth.” May this proud history of Zhengzhou give way to the knowledge of the true center of heaven and earth, which is God himself.
May 7 - Being an inland city, Zhengzhou has a more weighty, solid, down-to-earth character you find in northern Chinese cities, and agriculture still plays an important role in the region’s economy. May God use the city’s simple and down-to-earth character to create a hunger for the gospel of Jesus.
May 8 - Shaolin Temple, home of the Kung Fu fighting buddhist monks, is only 15 kilometers from Zhengzhou. The temple is one major attraction for tourists to Zhengzhou, and in recent years has been plagued by various scandals. May God open the eyes of the Chinese people to recognize the futility of idol worship, and turn their hearts to the good news of Jesus.
May 9 - The north–south Beijing–Guangzhou Railway and the east–west Longhai Railway intersect here, which gives Zhengzhou great transportation advantages in recent decades. Zhengzhou is developing quickly into a central hub in the interior of China, and it is becoming a city where ancient and modern collide, where tradition and new life coexist. May it also become the intersection point where God’s grace meets the hungry souls of the people.
