Good morning to everyone. Grace and Peace be with you.
This morning, as I looked out my kitchen window at my beautifully cut back yard, which I mowed, I remembered when my son would be the responsible party for that chore. We got a nice zero-turn, which he claimed ownership of. Though he loved that mower, getting him out to mow was no different than asking him to take out the overflowing trash … the question was always ‘Why?'. Eventually, usually when my ‘mom’ tone came out, he would begrudgingly go and mow. We have nearly three acres, so it takes a bit of time. I think he thought of ways to finish in record time each mow. Consequently, not all the tall grass or weeds were cut and that brought on another discussion of doing it right the first time. His counter would always be that the blades were now sharp enough. This was a battle we had every mow.
With this scenario in you mind, taking the idea of mowing the yard and my son’s approach of speeding through it quickly to get done, then blaming mechanical or equipment failures for the poor cut … I want you to think about your walk with Christ.
Has the Father given you a task that he wants you to complete … such as prayer and improving your prayer life? Has he given you the proper tools to accomplish this … such as a quiet time, a private place, and His word? Are you squeezing Him in, right before you go to work or an appointment in the 30 seconds you have to walk up to the door, and are you just reciting the Lord’s Prayer as fast as you can because you don’t want anyone to see you pray?
Confession … that was me. That was my prayer life … when I decided to pray. Running through it like my son sped through the yard. My equipment was not working properly because my fuel tank was empty. I did not read. I did not take the time to learn. Even when I was going to church, I wasn’t there. (Back in the day.) I would get through a prayer in zero point zero seconds and call it good, then wonder why my prayers were relieving me of my stress.
Quick note: There are times when that is the prayer that must be said. However, a consistent prayer time is what helps us muster through life.
Today, as we visit Him in His house, ask Him to become so present in your soul that you develop a proper discipline of prayer. When that prayer time becomes more consistent, it will become more routine and needed … like my morning coffee. The way I became more consistent in my prayer life is that I do not let my feet hit the floor without first giving thanks and praying over those I have asked to pray for. Each night, my head does not hit the pillow until I have given thanks and prayed for those who have asked for prayers. Those two prayer times have created a solid and regular meeting with God and let me tell you … it works. Not only do I sleep well at night, but I wake up refreshed, and my anxiety of the day is lightened because I have already put Him first.
My prayer for you today is for you to find that discipline and routine that will not feel like a chore, but an opportunity to give thanks and enjoy His company.
Be blessed.
**Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men, for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things. – Psalm 107:8-9
