THE TRANSFORMATION THAT WORKS IN SILENCE
The Parable of the Leaven
“The kingdom of heaven is like leaven that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds of flour until it worked all through the dough.”
—Matthew 13:33 (ESV)
Every listener of Jesus had seen this scene a hundred times. The woman takes a little leaven, mixes it into the dough, and waits. Nothing seems to happen. And yet, a few hours later, everything has changed.
The leaven is perhaps the most discreet parable in the chapter, and one of the most profound. It speaks of how God transforms: from the inside out, slowly before suddenly.
In a culture that confuses transformation with excitement, we often wait for big moments, experiences, and dazzling revelations as proof that something is really happening. But leaven makes no noise. It doesn't draw attention to itself. And that's precisely why it's effective.
What doesn't transform the heart will never permanently transform life. Only the leaven of the Spirit endures.
Take a few minutes to honestly reflect on this question: in what area of your life do you see God's silent work, a gradual transformation you couldn't have brought about yourself? Take the time to acknowledge it and thank Him for it. The Kingdom of God is silently at work in hearts, leading people to God.
Lord, thank you for not abandoning the dough you have begun to knead. Where I see nothing, you are at work. Where I am impatient for results, remind me that you are the God who is silently at work. Work within me from the inside.
