Many see the Bishop with the Staff…
but few understand the one who stands beside him and holds it.
The Bishop carries the Crozier but the Chaplain carries the burden behind the Office.
WHO IS A BISHOP’S CHAPLAIN?
A Bishop’s Chaplain is not just an assistant.
He is:
- A spiritual aide
- A confidential servant
- A guardian of order around the Bishop
- He is the one who understands the Bishop’s rhythm, his silence, his signals, and his seasons.
THE MYSTERY OF HOLDING THE CROZIER
The Crozier is not just a Staff, it is a symbol of:
- Shepherding
- Authority
- Oversight
When a Chaplain holds the Crozier, he is not just holding wood or metal…
He is:
- Handling authority
- Standing in proximity to power
- Serving the shepherd of God’s people
It is a position that requires discipline, loyalty, and spiritual sensitivity.
Because not everyone can stand close to authority and remain pure.
WHY EVERY BISHOP MUST HAVE A CHAPLAIN
Even great leaders never walked alone.
Our Lord Jesus Christ had those who attended closely to Him.
A Bishop carries:
- Spiritual weight
- Administrative pressure
- Emotional burden
The Chaplain helps to:
- Reduce distractions
- Maintain order
- Protect sacred moments
Without a Chaplain, the Bishop becomes overexposed and overburdened.
THE WORK OF A BISHOP’S CHAPLAIN
(1). CUSTODIAN OF ORDER
He ensures:
- Vestments are ready
- Sacred items are in place
- The altar environment is prepared
- He protects the flow of the service.
(2). GUARDIAN OF ACCESS
Not everyone should reach the Bishop at all times.
The Chaplain:
- Screens people
- Manages approach
- Preserves the Bishop’s strength
Access must be controlled to protect the Office.
(3). BEARER OF SACRED ITEMS
He handles:
- The Crozier
- Vestments
Liturgical materials
He must understand the meaning of each item, not just carry them.
(4). ATTENDANT IN MINISTRY
During services, he:
- Assists the Bishop
- Observes silently
- Responds quickly
He must be alert, disciplined.
