Lord, Lord Is Not Enough
Scripture
Matthew 7:21–23
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.”
Devotion
One of the most sobering truths in the Christian walk is that saying the right words is not the same as living the right life.
Jesus said, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven…”
That means it is possible to sound spiritual, look spiritual, and still be far from God in the heart.
You can know church language.
You can serve in ministry.
You can lift your hands in worship.
You can post scriptures and still struggle with hidden compromise.
The truth is, God is not only listening to our confession, He is watching our lives.
He sees the private places.
He sees how we speak to people when nobody is watching.
He sees the bitterness we hide.
He sees the pride we excuse.
He sees the habits we keep returning to.
He sees whether our hearts are truly surrendered.
Sometimes we become so focused on appearing spiritual that we forget God is after something deeper, relationship.
Not performance. Relationship.
Many people know how to say “Lord, Lord,” but few truly live with Jesus as Lord.
Because calling Him Lord means surrender.
It means His will above mine.
His standards above my comfort.
His truth above my emotions.
This is personal for me too.
There have been seasons where I looked fine from the outside, but inside, I knew there were areas I had not fully surrendered to God.
Areas where I wanted the appearance of closeness without the cost of obedience.
And that is dangerous.
Because Christianity is not about maintaining an image. It is about transformation.
It is not about looking saved. It is about being changed.
This devotion is an invitation to pause and ask hard questions.
Do I truly know God, or do I just know how to sound like someone who does?
Because at the end, what matters is not how loud we said “Lord,” but whether our lives showed that He truly was Lord.
Reflection Questions
Is my walk with God based on appearance or true surrender?
Do my private actions match my public confession?
Are there areas where I am performing spirituality instead of pursuing genuine relationship with God?
If God looked at my hidden life today, what would it reveal?
Prayer Point
Lord, help me to know You genuinely and not just perform spirituality.
Forgive me for the times I cared more about appearance than true surrender.
Search my heart and expose every area of compromise, pride, and hidden disobedience.
Teach me to follow You with sincerity, not just words.
Let my private life reflect my public confession.
May my relationship with You be real, deep, and honest.
I do not want to just say “Lord, Lord.”
I want my life to show that You are truly Lord.
Amen.
