THE CROSS PROVES SIN IS DEADLY, AND OBEDIENCE IS NOT LEGALISM.
If God’s law could be ignored, Jesus did not need to die.
If sin were harmless, Calvary was unnecessary.
If obedience were legalism, then Christ died to make rebellion safe.
But the cross screams what the world wants to silence:
SIN WAS SO DEADLY THAT ONLY THE BLOOD OF JESUS COULD CLEANSE IT.
---
1. THE CROSS PROVES SIN IS DEADLY
“The wages of sin is death.”
— Romans 6:23
“Without shedding of blood is no remission.”
— Hebrews 9:22
Jesus did not die because God’s law was weak.
He died because God’s law is holy, sin is fatal, and sinners could not save themselves.
“Sin is the transgression of the law.”
— 1 John 3:4
If there is no law, there is no sin.
If there is no sin, there is no need for a Saviour.
If there is no need for a Saviour, Calvary loses its meaning.
**THE CROSS DID NOT MAKE SIN SAFE.
THE CROSS EXPOSED SIN AS THE MONSTER THAT MURDERED THE SON OF GOD.**
---
2. THE LAW WAS NOT NAILED TO DEATH—OUR GUILT WAS
Many say, “The law was nailed to the cross.”
But Scripture says the handwriting of ordinances that was against us was nailed there.
“Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us… nailing it to his cross.”
— Colossians 2:14
The sacrifices ended because the Lamb had come.
The shadows ended because Christ fulfilled them.
The condemnation against the sinner was carried by Jesus.
But God’s moral law still reveals sin, holiness, and our need of grace.
“Think not that I am come to destroy the law… I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.”
— Matthew 5:17
“Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.”
— Romans 3:31
“The death of Christ proves the immutability of the law of God.”
— The Great Controversy, p. 466
**THE CROSS DID NOT NAIL GOD’S LAW TO DEATH.
THE CROSS NAILED OUR GUILT TO CHRIST.**
---
3. GRACE DOES NOT ERASE OBEDIENCE—IT CREATES IT
Grace does not make disobedience holy.
Grace does not turn rebellion into freedom.
Grace does not make God’s commandments disposable.
“Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid.”
— Romans 6:1–2
“The grace of God… teaching us that, denying ungodliness… we should live soberly, righteously, and godly.”
— Titus 2:11–12
Grace says, “I forgive you, I cleanse you, and I write My law in your heart.”
“I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts.”
— Hebrews 8:10
**GRACE DOES NOT DEFEND THE SIN CHRIST DIED TO DESTROY.
GRACE BREAKS SIN’S POWER AND WRITES OBEDIENCE IN THE HEART.**
---
4. SABBATH OBEDIENCE IS NOT LEGALISM—IT IS LOVE MADE VISIBLE
The Sabbath does not save us.
Jesus saves us.
But the saved heart does not argue with Jesus when He says:
“If ye love me, keep my commandments.”
— John 14:15
God did not say, “Remember any day.”
He said:
“Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy… the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God.”
— Exodus 20:8–10
Sabbath keeping becomes legalism only when someone uses it to earn salvation.
But Sabbath obedience becomes love when a redeemed soul says:
“Lord, You saved me—now I belong to You.”
**LEGALISM SAYS: “I OBEY SO GOD WILL SAVE ME.”
GRACE SAYS: “GOD SAVED ME, SO I OBEY HIM.”**
“Obedience—the service and allegiance of love—is the true sign of discipleship.”
— Steps to Christ, p. 60
---
5. CHEAP GRACE IS PRESUMPTION IN RELIGIOUS CLOTHING
Let us speak plainly:
THE BLOOD OF JESUS IS NOT HEAVEN’S PERMISSION SLIP FOR REBELLION.
Do not use the cross to defend the sin that nailed Jesus there.
“That so-called faith in Christ which professes to release men from the obligation of obedience to God, is not faith, but presumption.”
— Steps to Christ, p. 61
A father says, “Do not touch the live wire.”
The child disobeys.
The father suffers to save the child.
Would the child then say, “Since my father suffered, the warning no longer matters”?
That would be madness.
The father’s suffering did not abolish the warning.
It proved the warning was necessary.
So with Calvary.
Christ suffered because sin kills.
Christ bled because rebellion destroys.
Christ died because the broken law demanded death.
**THE CROSS DOES NOT PROVE THE LAW WAS ENDED.
THE CROSS PROVES SIN WAS DEADLY.**
---
6. PRESENT TRUTH JOINS JESUS WITH HIS COMMANDMENTS
In the last days, God’s people are not described as those who reject obedience in the name of grace.
They are described as those who have both:
“Here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.”
— Revelation 14:12
Not commandments without Jesus.
Not Jesus without commandments.
THE COMMANDMENTS OF GOD AND THE FAITH OF JESUS.
That is present truth.
You are not saved by Sabbath keeping.
You are not saved by obedience.
You are not saved by works.
You are saved by Jesus Christ alone.
But the Jesus who saves also changes.
He forgives the guilty.
He cleanses the heart.
He breaks sin’s chains.
He writes His law within.
He teaches the redeemed soul to obey—not to earn love, but because love has already been received.
---
7. REMNANT PEOPLE MUST NOT PREACH LAW WITHOUT CHRIST
Beloved, this truth is not given for argument only.
It is given to prepare a people for Christ.
Do not preach Sabbath truth with pride.
Preach it with tears.
Do not defend God’s law while living in sin.
Let Christ write the law in your heart.
Do not expose cheap grace while practicing dead obedience.
Let grace make you loving, humble, faithful, and surrendered.
**THE WORLD DOES NOT NEED COLD COMMANDMENT-KEEPERS.
IT NEEDS CHRIST-FILLED WITNESSES WHO OBEY FROM LOVE.**
So come to the cross.
Not to excuse sin.
Not to defend disobedience.
Not to rename rebellion as grace.
Come and look at what sin cost:
The nails.
The blood.
The agony.
The shame.
The separation.
The broken heart of Christ.
Then ask yourself:
IF SIN COST JESUS HIS LIFE, HOW CAN I CALL OBEDIENCE LEGALISM?
May God save us from cheap grace, dead obedience, and Sabbath profession without Christlike surrender.
THE CROSS PROVES SIN IS DEADLY—AND OBEDIENCE IS NOT LEGALISM.
THE CROSS PROVES SIN IS DEADLY, AND OBEDIENCE IS NOT LEGALISM.
