“If someone says, ‘I love God,’ and hates his brother, he is a liar.” 1 John 4:20

My entire family worked on the Volga River in Russia, and when my brother and I grew up, so did we. I married a river worker, but after we had two children, my husband and I separated.

I faced great difficulties trying to care for my two small children on a tiny salary. At times, I had nothing to feed them, and out of desperation, I looked to God by going to church. I even had my children baptized—just in case we didn’t survive.

Then, while visiting my sister-in-law, I saw her ask God’s blessing on the food. It was the first time I’d seen anyone pray openly, and I was quite shocked. Later, I talked to her about it, and she gave me a New Testament. I tried to read it, but I couldn’t understand anything. I desperately wanted to, though, so God made sure I got help.

My daughter and a friend were walking one day, and someone invited them to an evangelistic series. I began attending, too—although at first, I just wanted the free Bible they offered. However, when I got my Bible, I felt I couldn’t go any further. I was tormented by the thought that I might be left alone again after the series was over. Finally, I finished the Bible studies and decided to be baptized. But a few days before, I came down with sciatica! I’ll crawl if I have to, but I will be baptized! I thought.

I will never forget the day my daughter and I were baptized in the Volga River. It felt like a second birth, like I was walking on water, like I was in Heaven! Now I will never be alone, I thought. My Savior will always be by my side. He loves me, and He will take care of me!
