Necessary Distance
I used to hold the door open wide for you Watching every shadow that you were passing through
But the words you spoke started tasting like rustcTurning all the gold into a pile of mountain dust You took my name and you carved it into stone
In a shape I didn't recognize as my very own So I stepped back slowly and I locked the gatecNot out of anger and surely not out of hate
Access has changed and the lines have been drawn - I’m moving my spirit into the light of the dawn - I don’t wish you harm and I hope that you heal
In a world where the grace is finally real But the space I keep is a sacred ground nowvI’m breaking the weight of an old weary vow Protecting my peace is the prize I have won
Access is over and the healing's begun
I hope you find the growth that you’re looking for Beyond the threshold of my silent wooden door
I hope your heart finds a rhythmic peaceful beat And you find the kindness in everyone you meet
But you won't find it here in the garden I tendcWhere the broken fences have started to mend
Distance was the only way to keep myself whole To stop the static from swallowing up my soul
Some people lose their place in the sun When the damage they do can’t be undone It’s not about vengeance or keeping a score
It’s about not letting the hurt through the floor I’m breathing in deep and I’m letting it go Watching the river of memory flow
Away from the house that we built on the sand Into a quiet and much steadier land
Access has changed and the lines have been drawn - I’m moving my spirit into the light of the dawn - I don’t wish you harm and I hope that you heal
In a world where the grace is finally real But the space I keep is a sacred ground now I’m breaking the weight of an old weary vow Protecting my peace is the prize I have won Access is over and the healing's begun
Just not in my space anymore
I’ve closed the window and locked the door Go find your peace in the wide open blue While I find the version of me that is true
Goodbye to the noise and the names that you gave - Peace is the only thing I’m trying to save
Story Behind The Song
As I looked back into the past, I realized that in the last 10 years, I lost a peace that I did not know was gone. But as I begin a new dawn, my peace has slowly returned, turning up its volume and birthing this song from my heart to my pen.
I love writing, but sad to say I cannot sing a lick, having no idea how to write chords, nor can I play an instrument. However, I can write and know how I want those words to express themselves; all the rest are just mere tools for me.
I asked my AI assistant to write the chords based on the tone of my lyrics, adding in background music and singing based on genre and, of course, mood, the vocal gender of the primary singer and backup singers to flavor the way!
With a few other tweaks like refining EQ, compression, volume, and arrangement—to polish this track and improve its emotional impact for the glory of God and the message from my heart to yours.
I hope you enjoy it.
