THE MEANING OF “EPISCOPAL”
The word Episcopal comes from the Greek word episkopos, meaning “overseer” or “Bishop.” In its original sense, it refers to a system of leadership in the Church where authority is placed in the hands of Bishops who oversee the faith, doctrine, and pastoral care of the Christian community.
In Christianity, an Episcopal system of Church governance is one in which Bishops play a central role in leadership. These Bishops are responsible for guiding Clergy, supervising Dioceses, and maintaining unity in teaching and worship. This structure is seen in Churches such as the Worldwide Anglican Church and other Anglican traditions around the world.
The Episcopal system is often associated with the idea of Apostolic succession, the belief that Bishops are part of an unbroken line of spiritual authority passed down from the Apostles of Jesus Christ. Because of this, Episcopal Churches emphasize order, continuity, and hierarchical leadership in their structure.
In simple terms, Episcopal means “governed by Bishops.” It describes a Church system where spiritual authority is organized through Bishops who guide and oversee the life and mission of the Church.
Therefore, whenever people see the term “Episcopal Church,” it means a Christian Church that is governed and led by Bishops. It is a Church structured under episcopal oversight, where Bishops hold responsibility for leadership, unity, and doctrine.
