A Nugget of Truth.
For 1260 years, Bible prophecy said the saints would be “given into his hand” (Daniel 7:25).

Whose hand? The antichrist power identified by prophecy as the Roman Catholic Papacy.

Daniel called this period “a time and times and the dividing of time.” Revelation gives the same period as 42 months and 1260 days (Revelation 12:6,14; 13:5). Using the day-for-a-year principle in symbolic prophecy (Numbers 14:34; Ezekiel 4:6), this equals 1260 years.

Historicist interpreters have long identified this period as 538 AD to 1798 AD.

In 538 AD, after the Ostrogoths were defeated at Rome, the last major Arian power restraining papal supremacy in the West was removed. Justinian’s decree recognising the authority of the Roman bishop could now operate more fully, with church authority backed by civil power. Dissenters condemned as “heretics” were often punished by the state.

This period saw the rise of the Inquisition, where church courts condemned accused heretics and civil authorities carried out punishments. The Waldenses, Albigenses, and other dissenting groups suffered severe persecution. While historians debate exact numbers, the destruction caused by religious persecution during this era measured in the millions through executions, massacres, imprisonment, forced conversions, war, and systemic oppression.

In 1798 AD, French General Berthier entered Rome, abolished the papal government, and took Pope Pius VI captive. This marked the collapse of papal temporal supremacy and the close of the prophetic period.

Revelation describes this as a “deadly wound” (Revelation 13:3). But that wound would heal, and all the world would once again wonder after this power as we move toward earth’s final crisis.

The issue was never merely theology. Bible prophecy points to a religious-political system that seeks authority over conscience and demands homage that belongs to God alone.

Yet God has never left His people without refuge. Jesus is still our safety, our deliverer, and our strength. Whatever may come, God calls His people to stand true to His Word and follow the Lamb wherever He goes.
