“You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” Isaiah 26:3
I know of a young boy who asked his mother if he and his younger sister could stay alone at the house while she took a quick trip to town, only a few miles away. Since they were of legal age and it was in the middle of the day, the mother allowed it.
Not long after the mother left, the two children, who were playing upstairs, heard a noise downstairs. The boy went to check it out and came face to face with an intruder on the stairway. The intruder was as startled as the boy and yelled to another man downstairs, “The kids are home!”
Meanwhile, the boy ran back upstairs and hid his sister in a closet, telling her not to move, to be quiet, and that he would come back for her when it was safe. Until then, she was to remain there.
The intruders did no harm and quickly exited the home. Everything turned out well, and God protected both children. Throughout the ordeal, the sister remained in the closet and did as she was told, and when asked, the girl said she was not frightened.
Why not? Her response warmed my heart: “Why should I be? They left.”
She had total trust in her brother. She knew he loved her and would protect her. She seemed oblivious to the danger or the “what ifs” of the situation.
Did you know that God has told us to do the same thing? In Isaiah 26, the prophet talks about a time “in that day” when wickedness will cover the earth. There will be a time when God will pour out His judgments on this evil world because the judgments will cause “the inhabitants of the world to learn righteousness” (verse 9). This verse says that if grace is shown to the wicked, they will not learn righteousness.
So what does God tell His people to do during this time of judgment? “Come, my people, enter your chambers, and shut your doors behind you; hide yourself, as it were, for a little moment, until the indignation is past” (verse 20). Just like that loving, caring brother, He hides us in the closet and protects His own. It’s time to hide ourselves in the hand of the Almighty God. He will protect you. He loves and cares for His children. Though the world crumbles around us, God is sovereign and in control. We are safe. Trust Him now, dear children. Follow His direction. We can find peace in Him.
