In the story of the rich man and Lazarus, we have a description of the underworld. We find that it is made up of two compartments, paradise and hell, with an impassable gulf between. At the bottom of the gulf is the bottomless pit or abyss. This is a place of temporary confinement for evil spirits (demons). It has a king, Apollyon, but is kept locked by God, who commissions an angel to open it when he so desires (Revelation 9:1–11; 20:1–3).
