Daily Bible Lesson.
THE REAL LORD’S DAY.
Bible Evidence, History, and the Final Test
“I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day…”
— Revelation 1:10
Millions call Sunday “the Lord’s Day.”
But the Bible never does.
So the question is not:
“What does tradition teach?”
“What does the majority keep?”
“What did I inherit?”
The real question is:
WHAT DAY DOES GOD CALL HIS?
1. GOD MADE THE SEVENTH DAY HOLY
Before Sinai.
Before Israel.
Before ceremonies.
Before human tradition.
God blessed one day.
“And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it…” — Genesis 2:3
No verse says God blessed Sunday.
No verse says God sanctified the first day.
No verse says holiness was transferred.
WHAT GOD BLESSED, MAN HAS NO AUTHORITY TO REPLACE.
2. THE COMMANDMENT IDENTIFIES THE LORD’S DAY
“Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy… the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God.”
— Exodus 20:8, 10
The Bible does not call Sunday “the Sabbath of the Lord.”
It calls the seventh day the Sabbath of the Lord.
“The seventh day is the sabbath of rest…”
— Leviticus 23:3
IF THE LORD HAS A DAY, SCRIPTURE IDENTIFIES IT AS THE SEVENTH DAY.
3. JESUS IS LORD OF THE SABBATH
“The Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.”
— Mark 2:28
This is decisive.
The Lord’s Day must be the day of which Jesus is Lord.
“The sabbath was made for man…”
— Mark 2:27
Not for Jews only.
Not for one nation only.
Not for ceremony only.
FOR MAN.
Jesus did not abolish the Sabbath.
He removed man-made burdens and restored its mercy, joy, and blessing.
“It is lawful to do well on the sabbath days.”
— Matthew 12:12
CHRIST IS LORD OF THE SABBATH—NOT LORD OF A HUMAN SUBSTITUTE.
4. JESUS AND THE APOSTLES HONORED THE SABBATH
“As his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day…” — Luke 4:16
After the cross, the apostles still preached on the Sabbath.
“The Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath.”
— Acts 13:42
“The next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God.”
— Acts 13:44
“He reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath…”
— Acts 18:4
If Sunday replaced the Sabbath, the book of Acts should say it clearly.
But there is:
No command.
No transfer.
No new Sabbath.
No Sunday sanctification.
THE APOSTLES PREACHED CHRIST—BUT NEVER PROCLAIMED SUNDAY AS THE LORD’S DAY.
5. SUNDAY TEXTS DO NOT MAKE SUNDAY HOLY
Yes, Christ rose on the first day.
Glorious truth.
But a glorious event is not a commandment unless God makes it one.
Acts 20:7 mentions a meeting.
1 Corinthians 16:2 mentions setting aside funds.
But neither says:
“Keep Sunday holy.”
“Sunday is the Sabbath.”
“God changed the day.”
“The first day is now the Lord’s Day.”
“To the law and to the testimony…”
— Isaiah 8:20
SUNDAY HAS RELIGIOUS TRADITION—BUT NOT A COMMAND FROM GOD.
6. HISTORY SHOWS SUNDAY ROSE BY CHURCH AUTHORITY
Sunday observance grew after the apostles and was strengthened by church authority and civil power.
The Council of Laodicea commanded Christians not to rest on the Sabbath, but to honor Sunday instead.
Constantine also gave civil support to Sunday rest.
But history cannot sanctify what God never blessed.
“In vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.”
— Matthew 15:9
SUNDAY REST HAS HISTORY.
THE SEVENTH-DAY SABBATH HAS SCRIPTURE.
7. THE FINAL ISSUE IS WORSHIP AND AUTHORITY
Revelation calls the world back to worship the Creator.
“Worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea…” — Revelation 14:7
That language points back to creation—and directly to the Sabbath commandment.
“For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth… and rested the seventh day…”
— Exodus 20:11
God’s last-day people are identified:
“Here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.” — Revelation 14:12
The final issue is not convenience.
It is authority.
WILL GOD’S WORD RULE THE HEART—OR MAN’S TRADITION?
Beloved, do not ask only:
“What does my church practice?”
“What does the majority keep?”
“What did I inherit?”
“What is convenient?”
Ask:
WHAT DID GOD BLESS?
WHAT DID GOD COMMAND?
WHAT DID JESUS HONOR?
WHAT DOES SCRIPTURE IDENTIFY AS THE LORD’S DAY?
Truth is not changed by tradition.
God’s law is not edited by popularity.
Obedience is not legalism when love obeys Christ.
“If ye love me, keep my commandments.”
— John 14:15
THE FINAL TEST WILL REVEAL WHO FOLLOWS SCRIPTURE—AND WHO FOLLOWS TRADITION.
