A SPIRITUAL ESSAY….. May 26, 2026

Colossians 2:8: "Be careful that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit based on human tradition, based on the elements of the world, rather than Christ."

How Do We Identify A False Teacher?

To spot a counterfeit dollar bill, bank tellers do not spend hours studying poorly made fakes; they study the real thing so closely that a phony instantly stands out. Identifying a false teacher requires the exact same strategy. The New Testament repeatedly warns that spiritual deception is quiet, subtle, and highly dangerous, meaning believers must know how to spot the warning signs.
The first and most reliable test is doctrinal alignment. A false teacher will always distort who Jesus Christ is and what he accomplished. In 1 John 4:1–3, believers are commanded to "test the spirits." John explains that any teaching denying that Jesus came in the flesh—or any doctrine that minimizes his divine nature and perfect sacrifice—is not from God. If a teacher’s message contradicts the foundational truths of the Bible, their source is compromised, no matter how charismatic they might be.
The second test is character and motivation. Jesus famously warned in Matthew 7:15 to watch out for false prophets who arrive in "sheep’s clothing" but are actually "ravaging wolves." He noted that you will recognize them by their fruit (Matthew 7:16). True teachers model humility, selflessness, and the fruit of the Spirit. In contrast, 2 Peter 2:1–3 warns that false teachers are often driven by secret greed and personal pride, using "deceptive words" to exploit people for their own gain, fame, or power.
Finally, we must examine the impact on the audience. True biblical teaching leads to peace, unity, conviction of sin, and spiritual growth. False teaching, however, breeds division and appeals to human vanity. Paul warns in 2 Timothy 4:3–4 that a time comes when people will not tolerate sound doctrine. Instead, they seek out leaders who tickle their "itching ears"—telling them exactly what their selfish desires want to hear rather than the truth of God's word. Similarly, Romans 16:17–18 advises believers to watch out for those who cause obstacles and divisions using smooth, flattering talk to deceive the unsuspecting.
Identifying false teachers ultimately comes down to vigilance. By testing every message against the absolute truth of Scripture, evaluating the moral fruit of the speaker, and guarding against smooth talk that compromises the gospel, you can remain anchored, stable, and fully protected from deception.
