“Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he cuts off, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.”
John 15:2
PRUNING THAT MAKES YOU GROW
The image of the vine is familiar to every Bible reader. To produce more fruit, the vinedresser prunes. Pruning is not a punishment. A pruned branch produces more fruit than one left to grow untended.
“He prunes it so that it will be even more fruitful”—pruning applies to branches that are already bearing fruit. For God always aims for abundance.
What is pruned in the life of the believer: attachments that lead us astray spiritually, activities that seem good but do not bear lasting fruit. Pruning hurts. It seems like a loss. But the vine knows that the following spring will be more fruitful.
What is God pruning in your life right now—an activity, a relationship, a project? Instead of resisting, ask Him what He sees that you don't yet see, and cooperate with the Holy Spirit.
Oh Father, I accept that You prune me even when it hurts. I believe You do it so that I may bear more fruit. May Your will be done in Jesus' name. Amen.
