Dear Father,

King David wrote powerful words, many of which remain essential in understanding Your purpose and program for our lives. One of his epistles says, “He teacheth my hands to war, so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms.” This scripture is often read without considering its existential effect in our lives. First, we must ask: how, when, and why do You teach our hands to war?

I have seen how soldiers are trained for war. Their bodies, minds, and entire beings bear witness that they are no longer who they used to be. It is a process so tedious that it cannot happen without their awareness. Likewise, Your program for our lives involves seasons in which we are trained for war. Today, I pondered the danger of entering such seasons unaware--fighting training as though it were destructive.

Our successes as Christians depend not solely on our commitment to prayer and fasting, but also on our ability to discern seasons and, perhaps, their reasons. David knew when the prayer point should be about his enemies and when he was being trained. But how many of us can tell the difference?

Growth in this kingdom requires an understanding of the seasons we are in and the virtues they are meant to birth within us. Only then will we enter such seasons seeking the virtues rather than focusing on the struggles.
