• Gehenna—This word is found twelve times in the New Testament and is derived from the Valley of Hinnom just west of the city of Jerusalem, which served as the city dump. Jesus, who spoke this word eleven of the twelve times it occurs in the New Testament, borrowed the vivid imagery of refuse, worms, maggots, and never-ending smoldering fires in using the word. Gehenna is the same place as “the fiery lake of burning sulfur” (Revelation 20:10), “the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:14), and “the second death,” which refers to eternal separation from God (Revelation 20:6, 14). All unredeemed humans, all demons, and Satan will end up there, but none of them are there now. Presently, Gehenna is uninhabited.
