• Hades—Found ten times in the New Testament, the Greek word hades can be a synonym for the grave (see Acts 2:27, 31), but the majority of occurrences refer to the place where the souls of lost people are presently confined while they await the final day of judgment. Hades is like the county jail where inmates are held until their trial and their transfer to the penitentiary (Gehenna), where they will serve out their eternal sentence.
