The Importance of the Sabbath Day According to the Scriptures
From the very beginning of creation, the Sabbath was established by God as a holy and blessed day of rest, worship, and fellowship with Him. The Bible consistently teaches that the seventh day Sabbath — not Sunday — was sanctified by God Himself. Jesus Christ, His apostles, and the early believers also observed the Sabbath according to the Scriptures.

Many people today observe Sunday as a traditional day of worship, but when we carefully study the Word of God, we find that the Bible repeatedly points to the seventh-day Sabbath as God’s appointed holy day.

1. The Sabbath Was Established at Creation
The Sabbath did not begin with Moses or only for the Jewish people. It was instituted at creation for all mankind.
“And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had made; and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it.”
— Genesis 2:2–3
The word “sanctified” means set apart as holy. God specifically blessed the seventh day, not the first day of the week.
The Sabbath was given before sin entered deeply into human history and before any nation existed. It was part of God’s perfect order from the beginning.

2. The Sabbath Is Part of the Ten Commandments
God Himself wrote the Ten Commandments with His own finger, showing their eternal importance.
“Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God.”
— Exodus 20:8–10
Notice the command says:
• “Remember” the Sabbath
• “The seventh day” is the Sabbath
• It belongs to “the Lord thy God”
The Bible nowhere changes this commandment to Sunday.

3. The Sabbath Is a Sign Between God and His People
God called the Sabbath a special sign of holiness and obedience.
“Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations.”
— Exodus 31:13
“And hallow my sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between me and you, that ye may know that I am the Lord your God.”
— Ezekiel 20:20
The Sabbath reminds believers that God is Creator, Sustainer, and Sanctifier.

4. Jesus Kept the Sabbath
Jesus Christ Himself faithfully observed the Sabbath.
“And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day.”
— Luke 4:16
The phrase “as his custom was” shows this was His regular practice.
Jesus never abolished the Sabbath. Instead, He corrected man-made traditions that had burdened it.
“The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath.”
— Mark 2:27
Jesus declared Himself:
“Lord also of the sabbath.”
— Mark 2:28
If Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath, then the Sabbath still belongs to Him.

5. Jesus Expected the Sabbath to Continue After His Resurrection
When speaking about future events concerning Jerusalem’s destruction decades later, Jesus still referred to Sabbath observance.
“But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day.”
— Matthew 24:20
This statement was made long after His resurrection would occur, showing the Sabbath would still be recognized by believers.

6. The Apostles Continued Keeping the Sabbath
After Jesus ascended to heaven, the apostles continued worshipping on the Sabbath.
Paul Preached on the Sabbath
“And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures.”
— Acts 17:2
Gentiles Also Gathered on the Sabbath
“And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God.”
— Acts 13:44
The apostles did not direct believers to Sunday worship. Both Jews and Gentiles assembled on the Sabbath.

7. There Is No Direct Command in Scripture to Observe Sunday as the Holy Day
The Bible records the first day of the week several times, but nowhere does it command Christians to keep Sunday holy in place of the Sabbath.
The sanctification and blessing were always attached to the seventh day.
Many historians acknowledge that widespread Sunday observance developed gradually through church tradition and Roman influence centuries after Christ.

8. The Sabbath Will Be Observed Even in God’s Future Kingdom
The prophet Isaiah speaks of Sabbath worship in the future new earth.
“And it shall come to pass, that from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the Lord.”
— Isaiah 66:23
This shows the Sabbath remains significant even in God’s eternal kingdom.

9. The Spiritual Blessings of Observing the Sabbath
The Sabbath is not merely about refraining from work. It is a sacred time for:
• Worship
• Prayer
• Rest
• Family fellowship
• Studying God’s Word
• Drawing closer to the Lord
God promises blessings to those who honour His Sabbath.
“Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord.”
— Isaiah 58:13–14
In a world filled with stress, noise, and constant labour, the Sabbath reminds believers to pause and trust God completely.

The Sabbath is not merely an old tradition; it is a divine appointment established by the Creator Himself. Observing the Sabbath according to Scripture is an act of love, reverence, and obedience to God.
