Dear Father, When the high priest and soldiers came to arrest Jesus, there was a revolt among His disciples. The Scripture says: “And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear.” But Jesus, in response, touched his ear and healed him. The most striking part of this passage is that Jesus performed a noteworthy miracle in the presence of His persecutors, still they persecuted Him. As much as this worked in favor of Your program, we still cannot overlook the hardness of heart it would require to remain blind to what was made plain before their eyes. The problem, however, extends beyond its occurrence in the time of Jesus to its recurrence even today. People who recognize the truth still refuse to submit to its transforming power, unaware that persecuting Jesus involves more than whips and crosses; it also involves a heart that rejects truth. How hard can it be to live in honor of our convictions? How hardened can a heart become that it rejects what is evidently true? How unaware must a person be to crucify Jesus again? Yet this continues to be the experience, and its recurrence is alarming: people ignoring what has clearly been revealed.
