Mahalalel — “Praise of God”
Scripture (NKJV):
“Cainan lived seventy years, and begot Mahalalel.” — Genesis 5:12 (NKJV)
At first glance, Mahalalel appears to be just another name in a genealogy. Yet every name in Scripture has meaning and purpose. The name Mahalalel comes from Hebrew words meaning “Praise of God” or “The Blessed God.”
It is striking that in Genesis 5—a chapter filled with the repeated reminder, “and he died”—God places a name that points upward in worship. In the midst of a fallen world under the curse of sin, there is still praise. In the midst of death, there is still hope. In the midst of judgment, there is still a God worthy of worship.
Many people praise God when life is easy, but biblical praise shines brightest when circumstances are difficult.
Psalm 34:1 declares:
“I will bless the LORD at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth.”
Notice David did not say, “I will praise the Lord when everything goes my way.” He said, “at all times.” Genuine praise is not based on circumstances; it is based on God's unchanging character.
Mahalalel's name reminds us that mankind was created to glorify God. Sin entered the world and distorted that purpose, but God has never changed His desire that His people worship Him.
The greatest reason for praise is not found in earthly blessings but in salvation through Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 1:7 says:
“In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace.”
Every believer has a reason to praise God because Christ took our place on the cross. The judgment we deserved fell upon Him. The death that was our destiny was conquered through His resurrection.
One day every genealogy, every earthly achievement, and every possession will fade away. What will remain is our relationship with God through Christ.
The question is not merely whether you know about God, but whether you know Him personally.
Jesus said:
“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” — John 14:6 (NKJV)
If you have never trusted Christ, today can be the day of salvation. Turn from your sin and place your faith in Him alone. He died for your sins, was buried, and rose again the third day. He offers forgiveness, eternal life, and peace with God to all who believe.
Salvation Prayer
"Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner and cannot save myself. I believe You died on the cross for my sins and rose again from the dead. I turn from my sin and place my trust in You alone as my Lord and Savior. Forgive me, cleanse me, and give me eternal life. Help me to live for Your glory and praise all the days of my life. In Your name I pray, Amen."
Today's Challenge:
Live up to the spirit of Mahalalel's name. No matter what comes your way today, find reasons to praise God—not merely for what He has done, but for who He is. His mercy is everlasting, His promises are sure, and His salvation is glorious. Amen.
