“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”
1 Peter 5:7 (NIV)
I have believed in the existence of God since childhood. My faith had roots in two amazing stories of salvation—the first of my friend, who was miraculously saved from drowning when he fell down a village well. The other story is my own. You see, when I was just three years old, I was playing under a car that was being repaired. And when the driver got behind the wheel, the car simply would not start—until he found me and pulled me out from under it!
The atheistic environment in Russia at the time definitely influenced me. Despite my childhood faith in God, I participated in the Young Communist League activities and even graduated from a Marxist-Leninist university. But I never adopted the whole Communist personality cult.
Then one day, while I was working, I found a book called, The Son of Man, and the only chapter that was readable was one about the crucifixion of Christ. Tears rolled down my cheeks as I felt compassion for Jesus and realized His great love for me. That chapter radically changed my thinking, and after that, I could not help but talk about Jesus Christ to everyone around me. I also couldn’t help but pray and buy all the spiritual literature I could find.
It wasn’t long before a believer came to the department where I was a foreman, and he not only taught me about God but also invited me to Bible study meetings. Of course, I agreed because I really wanted to learn. In 1994, I was baptized, and ever since, attending church and studying the Holy Scriptures have been a regular part of my life. My wife, a proud woman, was against it, but she also bowed her knees before the Lord when her mother was diagnosed with cancer.
Looking at my life, I’m amazed that many friends and strangers come to God through some kind of misfortune, but I came to Him through feeling happiness. I have often asked myself, Why am I so blessed? I did everything I wanted, and I always felt that Someone I could not see was always helping me.
And so it turned out—it was God who took care of my welfare and guarded me throughout my life. He also took care of my eternal fate because He is the One who died for me at Calvary.
