— Psalm 42:11

"Why are you downcast, my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God."

PREACHING HOPE TO ONESELF

In this psalm, the psalmist speaks to himself. He engages in a dialogue with himself. "My soul" is addressed, questioned, exhorted. "Why are you downcast?"

"Put your hope in God." This is a command the psalmist gives himself. Hoping in moments of despondency is not a spontaneous feeling. It is a deliberate decision to remember who God is and to align oneself with this reality.

"For I will yet praise him," the promise is expressed in the future tense. I am not yet praising him. But I know that I will praise him. Hope lies between "not yet" and "yet."

So, when your soul is downcast, learn to speak to yourself. Remember who God is and what He has done. Preach hope to yourself in those moments when it doesn't come spontaneously. For the Lord is your salvation and your God.
