Introduction
Mark 14:53–72 records the trial of Jesus before the Jewish religious leaders and Peter’s denial of Christ. Following His arrest in Gethsemane, Jesus is brought before the high priest, chief priests, scribes, and elders. False witnesses accuse Him, and eventually Jesus openly declares His identity as the Son of God and Messiah. In response, the religious leaders condemn Him for blasphemy and begin mocking and abusing Him.
At the same time, Peter—who earlier promised complete loyalty to Jesus—becomes afraid and denies knowing Him three times. This passage powerfully contrasts the faithfulness of Jesus under suffering with the weakness and fear of Peter.
For Christians, this section teaches the courage and truthfulness of Jesus, the danger of fear and self-confidence, and the grace of God toward failing believers.
