He Listened to His Angel

“The angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him, and delivers them.” Psalm 34:7
My maternal grandpa was a short, stocky, hard-working man. He was also very quiet and gentle, and never raised his voice or argued with anyone. Proverbs 15:1 says that a soft answer turns away wrath, and my grandpa lived that—and followed many other things written in God’s Word.
My mom used to tell me how her dad loved the Lord and His Word, and that he taught her from a very early age to love them, also. His Bible was always close at hand, and every time we’d see him sitting in his favorite chair, he was reading it.
When Grandpa was in his late 20s he worked in a wooden butter tub factory, and there was a large engine in the middle with belts that went up to several large pulley systems mounted to the ceiling around the plant.
One day, as he stood working alone in his usual place, he heard a voice say to him, Go get a drink of water.
I am not thirsty, he thought, I don’t need a drink.
Again he heard the voice, more insistent now: Go and get a drink.
This puzzled him and he thought, I am not thirsty! I don’t need a drink!
Then he heard the voice again—and this time it was very firm, Go and get a drink—right now!”
Finally, he walked to the water fountain and got a drink, and as he turned around to walk back, the pulley system right over where he’d been standing came crashing down to the floor! Without a doubt, my grandpa suddenly realized that the voice he’d heard was that of his guardian angel!
I praise the Lord for His loving watchcare over Grandpa and my mother throughout their lives, and that I’ve had the opportunity to witness the close relationship they both had with God.
