IF THE CROSS ENDED GOD’S LAW—WHY DOES THE NEW TESTAMENT STILL TEACH IT?
The Cross Did Not Cancel the Commandments—It Exposed Sin and Magnified Grace
Many say:
“We are under grace now, not law.”
But here is the question that shakes cheap grace:
IF GOD’S LAW WAS ABOLISHED AT THE CROSS, WHY DOES THE NEW TESTAMENT STILL TEACH IT?
The cross did not bury God’s commandments.
The cross buried our condemnation.
“Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.”
— Romans 3:31
Grace does not erase obedience.
Grace writes obedience in the heart.
“I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts…” — Hebrews 8:10
So let us look carefully.
God’s moral law still speaks in the New Testament.
1. NO OTHER GODS
“Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.” — Matthew 4:10
Grace does not allow another god on the throne.
Christ must be first.
2. NO IDOLS
“My dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.”
— 1 Corinthians 10:14
Grace does not bless idols.
It calls us out of them.
3. DO NOT TAKE GOD’S NAME IN VAIN
“Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.” — 2 Timothy 2:19
To carry Christ’s name while cherishing sin is not grace.
It is hypocrisy.
4. REMEMBER THE SABBATH
“The sabbath was made for man…” — Mark 2:27
Jesus did not say the Sabbath was made for Jews only.
He said it was made for man.
The Lord of the Sabbath did not come to bury His day.
He came to restore its blessing.
5. HONOR FATHER AND MOTHER
“Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise.”— Ephesians 6:2
Grace does not destroy family duty.
It deepens love, respect, and obedience.
6. DO NOT KILL
“Thou shalt not kill.” — Romans 13:9
Jesus carried this command deeper than the act.
He went to the anger, hatred, and spirit behind murder.
7. DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY
“Thou shalt not commit adultery.”
— Romans 13:9
Grace does not make impurity safe.
Grace makes the heart clean.
8. DO NOT STEAL
“Let him that stole steal no more…”
— Ephesians 4:28
Grace does not excuse dishonesty.
It transforms the hand from taking to giving.
9. DO NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS
“Lie not one to another…” — Colossians 3:9
Grace does not sanctify lies.
It creates truth in the inward parts.
10. DO NOT COVET
“Thou shalt not covet.” — Romans 7:7
Grace does not merely change behavior.
It reaches the desire.
It cleanses the craving.
It changes the heart.
THE TRUTH IS CLEAR
The New Testament does not erase the Ten Commandments.
It repeats them.
It deepens them.
It magnifies them.
It writes them in the heart.
Legalism says:
“I obey so God will save me.”
Grace says:
“God saved me, so I obey Him.”
That is the difference.
“If ye love me, keep my commandments.” — John 14:15
Do not call love legalism.
Do not call obedience bondage.
Do not use grace to defend the sin Jesus died to destroy.
THE CROSS DID NOT MAKE GOD’S LAW OBSOLETE.
IT PROVED SIN WAS DEADLY.
If God’s law could simply be canceled, why did Jesus have to die?
Calvary shows two things:
Sin is serious.
Grace is costly.
The blood of Christ does not make rebellion holy.
It makes sinners new.
GOD’S LAST-DAY PEOPLE ARE CLEARLY DESCRIBED
“Here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.” — Revelation 14:12
Not commandments without Jesus.
Not Jesus without commandments.
But both:
THE COMMANDMENTS OF GOD
AND THE FAITH OF JESUS.
Faith without obedience becomes presumption.
Obedience without Christ becomes legalism.
But Christ in the heart produces loving obedience.
Grace does not erase God’s law.
Grace writes God’s law in the soul.
Beloved, the issue is not whether works can save us.
They cannot.
Only Jesus saves.
But the question is:
Has Jesus truly changed the heart?
A saved heart does not fight the commandments.
It loves the God who gave them.
A surrendered heart does not ask, “How little can I obey?”
It asks, “Lord, what wilt Thou have me to do?”
The cross did not cancel obedience.
The cross created a people who obey from love.
So do not hide rebellion behind the word “grace.”
Do not call commandment-breaking freedom.
Do not praise the cross while defending the sins that nailed Jesus there.
IF THE COMMANDMENTS ENDED AT THE CROSS—
WHY ARE THEY STILL IN THE NEW TESTAMENT?
Because God’s law still stands.
Because grace still transforms.
Because Jesus still saves from sin.
Because the last-day saints will keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.
