Devotion from Genesis 1:1 (NKJV)
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” — Genesis 1:1 (NKJV)
It All Begins with God
The very first verse of the Bible does not attempt to prove God's existence. It simply declares it.
“In the beginning God...”
Before there was a universe, there was God. Before there was time, space, matter, stars, angels, or mankind, God already existed. He is eternal, self-existent, and sovereign over all things.
This truth is foundational to life. If God created everything, then He owns everything. If He created us, then we are accountable to Him.
The world often tells us that life is about finding our own truth, creating our own purpose, and living by our own rules. Scripture tells us something very different: life begins with God. We will never understand ourselves until we understand our Creator.
The Power of the Creator
Genesis 1:1 reveals the immeasurable power of God. The heavens with their countless stars and galaxies did not come into existence by accident.
“The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork.” (Psalm 19:1 NKJV)
The God who spoke the universe into existence is not limited by your circumstances today. The problem that seems overwhelming to you is not overwhelming to Him. The God who created everything from nothing is able to sustain, guide, and provide for His people.
The Creator Became the Savior
The Bible begins with creation, but it ultimately points to redemption.
The Creator of Genesis 1:1 is the Savior revealed in the New Testament.
“All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.” (John 1:3 NKJV)
Jesus Christ is not merely a teacher or prophet. He is the eternal Creator who entered His own creation to save sinners.
Sin has separated humanity from God.
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23 NKJV)
But the Creator loved His creation so much that He came to die for our sins.
“Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures.” (1 Corinthians 15:3 NKJV)
The One who made the heavens and the earth stretched out His hands on a cross so that guilty sinners could be forgiven and reconciled to God.
Application
When you read Genesis 1:1, remember that your life is not an accident. You were created by a wise, powerful, and loving God. Your greatest need is not self-improvement but reconciliation with your Creator through Jesus Christ.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for creating the heavens and the earth and for giving me life. Thank You that the Creator became my Savior through Jesus Christ. Help me to live each day with the awareness that You are Lord over all things. Draw those who do not know You to repentance and faith in Christ. May we worship You as Creator, King, and Redeemer. In Jesus' name, Amen.
