CHOOSE LIFE

Scripture: Deuteronomy 30:15–20

In this passage, Moses presents a powerful truth to the children of Israel. He tells them that God has set before them life and good, and death and evil. This shows that when we have God, we have His life, goodness, blessings, and favor. On the other hand, the enemy represents evil, destruction, and death.

The emphasis on loving the Lord your God reveals an important secret. When you truly love God, you will be able to love others. Loving God naturally leads to obedience. It becomes easier to keep His commandments, walk in His ways, and live according to His will. Love for God transforms obedience from a burden into a joyful reality.

Moses was a man who knew God intimately. He could not have taught what he had not experienced. Throughout his life, he discovered that the simple secret to a blessed life is wholehearted love for God—with all your heart, soul, and strength. Therefore, he continually encouraged the people to embrace this truth.

Because Israel was in covenant with God, Moses made them understand that turning away from God to serve other gods would be disastrous. It would lead to destruction, death, and the shortening of their days. To turn away from God is to turn away from one's divine covering, leaving oneself vulnerable to the enemy and the consequences of sin.

To emphasize the seriousness of his message, Moses called heaven and earth as witnesses against them. He declared that life and death, blessing and cursing, had been set before them. The reason for this declaration was the power of choice that God had given them. They could choose God and receive His life and blessings, or choose the path of sin and experience the curses attached to disobedience. Every act of sin carries consequences, just as obedience carries blessings.

Moses knew from personal experience the value of choosing life. Therefore, he passionately urged the people to choose life. What a wonderful God we serve! Even after giving mankind the freedom to choose, He still lovingly points us toward the path of life so that we will not be deceived into choosing the way of death and destruction.

Moses stretched out this invitation once more: love the Lord your God, obey His voice, keep His commandments, statutes, and judgments, and cling to Him. Why? Because God is your life. He is your source, your sustainer, and the reason for your existence. He is also the length of your days.

Moses reminded them that by remaining faithful to God, they would enjoy the blessings of the land God had promised to their fathers—Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. God is a covenant-keeping God. He never fails and never breaks His promises.

Beloved of God, the choice is still yours today. Choose life. Choose God. Choose obedience. Choose His ways. In choosing Him, you choose life, blessing, peace, and an eternal future in His presence.

God's Loving Heart.
