Dear Father,

Many of us can relate to the search for new roles as soon as our current employment no longer serves us. At other times, we move because there is a need for a promotion our former employment cannot provide. The logic behind change, therefore, leans more toward the desire to be better, and questions arise when a change results in a worse outcome.

Today, I came across a passage that says: "Has a nation ever changed its gods? (Yet they are not gods at all.) But my people have exchanged their glorious God for worthless idols." There seems to be no logic behind the devotion some ascribe to things that are no gods, yet others exchange the One true God for worthless idols. How does an exchange so irrational gradually become possible in matters of the spirit?

The scripture highlights that the exchange was made for worthless idols. The very mention of idols may exclude many of us who believe idols to only be about carved images. However, idolatry is the condition in which anything or anyone other than You occupies the highest place in our hearts. One of the greatest dangers of idolatry is its subtlety. Unlike obvious acts of rebellion, idolatry often disguises itself so well that a person may be unaware that something else has become their highest priority.

Today, I am reflecting on my desires and pursuits, whether intentionally or unintentionally, I may have given Your place to worthless idols.
