THE SOURCE OF ENJOYMENT
Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.
1 Timothy 6:17
Whether we have much or little, we are called to be dependent on God in every area of our lives. In this letter to Timothy, the Apostle Paul addresses the position of the heart. Paul uses the phrase in this present world to remind us of the contrast between temporary earthly riches and our eternal reality. The danger of wealth is that it can cause arrogance, leading people to believe they have no need for God.
Paul warns that putting our hope in finances is a gamble because wealth is inherently uncertain. It can be lost in a moment. However, the character of God is a consistent foundation. We are encouraged to shift our focus from hoarding material things to a posture of generosity. God does not command us to be miserable. He richly provides everything for our enjoyment. He simply wants us to see Him as the source rather than our bank account. We can enjoy His blessings with gratitude, as long as those things do not become our source of security.
As we look for ways to invest our talents into things that outlast us, we have a unique opportunity to mirror the heart of the Father. We must use our wealth to provide an eternal hope for others by investing in things of the Kingdom.
God bless you!
