Matthew 5:38тАУ42

You have heard it said:

"An eye for an eye.
A tooth for a tooth."

That law was ancient.
Familiar.
Fair by human reasoning.

If someone hurts you тАФ
you have the right to hurt them back.
Equally.
No more.
No less.

Justice.

And then Jesus said:

"But I say to you тАФ
do not resist the one who is evil.

If anyone slaps you on the right cheek,
turn the other also.

If anyone would sue you
and take your tunic,
let him have your cloak as well.

If anyone forces you to go one mile,
go with him two miles.

Give to the one who begs from you.
And do not refuse the one
who would borrow from you."

Reflection

This is one of the most challenging things
Jesus ever said.

And it is deeply misunderstood.

He is not telling us
to become doormats.

He is not telling us
to accept abuse silently.

He is revealing something
about the nature of true freedom тАФ

and the power of a person
who chooses love
when they have every right
to choose retaliation.

In the ancient world,
a slap on the right cheek
was delivered with the back of the hand тАФ
an act not just of violence
but of deep humiliation.

To turn the other cheek
was not weakness.

It was to say:

"You cannot take my dignity.
You cannot pull me down
to the level of your anger.
I choose something different."

That is not surrender.

That is the most radical kind of strength.

The second mile matters too.

Roman soldiers could legally compel
anyone to carry their pack
for one mile.

One mile was the law.
Two miles was a choice.

And in that second mile тАФ
everything changes.

You are no longer a victim of force.
You are a person acting freely.
From love.
Not from fear.

That second mile is where
the Gospel actually lives.

Context тАФ Important

This passage is part of the Sermon on the Mount тАФ
the longest continuous teaching of Jesus
in the entire Gospel.

He is not abolishing the law.
He is fulfilling it тАФ
taking it deeper,
past the surface of behaviour
to the root of the heart.

The old law governed actions.
Jesus governs the heart that produces those actions.

Truths to Remember

тАв Jesus is not teaching passivity тАФ
He is teaching transformed power
тАв "Turn the other cheek" is an act of dignity,
not defeat
тАв The second mile is where freedom lives тАФ
you chose it, it was not forced on you
тАв Revenge keeps us trapped in the other person's story;
love sets us free from it
тАв This teaching only makes sense
if you believe in a God who sees and repays

Prayer

Lord Jesus,
this teaching is hard.

My first instinct
when I am hurt
is to protect myself тАФ
to retaliate,
to make sure the other person
knows what they did.

But You are showing me
a different kind of strength.

Give me the grace
to choose the second mile тАФ

not because I am weak,
but because I am free.

Because I belong to You,
and You see everything.

Amen.

Has anyone ever chosen love
when they had every right to retaliate тАФ
and it changed everything?
